Step 1: I Didn’t Guess — I Diagnosed the Problem First
Before touching a single line of code, I ran the site through a few tools to see exactly what was slowing it down:
- Google PageSpeed Insights for Core Web Vitals scoring
- GTmetrix to see, second by second, what was loading and when
- Query Monitor to check for slow database queries and plugin bloat behind the scenes
This step matters more than people think. Guessing at fixes wastes time. The data showed a mix of problems: weak hosting, oversized images, render-blocking scripts, and way too many plugins running on every page.
Step 2: I Fixed the Hosting First
The site was sitting on a cheap, shared hosting plan. And here’s the thing — no amount of caching or tweaking fixes a website sitting on hosting that’s simply too weak to serve pages quickly.
I moved it to hosting with:
- Server-level caching built in
- A CDN (content delivery network) to serve files from servers closer to visitors

Step 3: I Cut the Plugin Bloat

Step 5: I Cleaned Up the Code Getting in the Way
Some CSS and JavaScript files were blocking the page from rendering until they finished loading first — a classic cause of that annoying “blank page” delay.
- Deferred non-essential JavaScript so the main content shows up first
- Combined and minified CSS/JS files to cut down on browser requests
- Stripped out unused CSS that was loading site-wide but only needed on a couple of pages
Step 6: I Layered In Proper Caching
With hosting, plugins, and images cleaned up, I added a solid caching setup on top:
- Page caching, so full pages load instantly instead of rebuilding every visit
- Browser caching, so returning visitors skip re-downloading files that haven’t changed
- All of it working alongside the CDN from Step 2 for even faster delivery
The Result
Load time dropped from 4-6 seconds down to under one second. Core Web Vitals went from “poor” to “good” across the board. Within weeks, the client saw longer visit times and fewer people bouncing off the site immediately — a clear sign people were actually sticking around instead of leaving.
